Happy Sikh New Year!

As the month of Chet (ਚੇਤ) begins, Sikhs across the world, including those in Birmingham and the West Midlands, joyfully welcome the Sikh New Year, marking the start of the Nanakshahi Calendar. This sacred time signifies spiritual renewal, fresh beginnings, and the blossoming of nature, reminding us of the eternal cycle of life and devotion.

On this auspicious occasion, we extend our warmest New Year greetings to all the listeners of Darbar Sahib Radio and the wider Sikh community. May this year bring Chardi Kala (eternal optimism), peace, and prosperity to all.

Chet and Barah Maha – A Time for Spiritual Awakening

The month of Chet is beautifully described in Barah Maha, the sacred poetic composition in Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which expresses the soul’s longing to unite with the Divine. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, in Raag Maajh, reminds us that those who meditate upon Waheguru in this month experience true joy:

“ਚੇਤਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਘਨੇਰਾ ॥
(In the month of Chet, meditate upon the Lord, and immense joy shall come to you.)

The arrival of Chet marks the awakening of both nature and the soul. Just as new flowers bloom after winter, Sikhs are encouraged to revitalise their spiritual journey through Naam Simran (meditation on God’s Name), Seva (selfless service), and Ardas (prayer).

Sikh New Year Celebrations in Birmingham and the West Midlands

Throughout Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, and other parts of the West Midlands, the Sikh community gathers in Gurdwaras for special kirtan and prayers. Many engage in Seva, from serving in Langar (the community kitchen) to supporting local charities and food banks. Gurdwaras, including Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick, Gurdwara Singh Sabha Birmingham, and others, hold Akhand Path Sahib (continuous reading of Guru Granth Sahib Ji), seeking blessings for the year ahead.

The Barah Maha message reminds us that while seasons change, true happiness lies in staying connected with Waheguru. As we step into the new year, let us renew our commitment to living with kindness, humility, and love for all.

Once again, Darbar Sahib Radio wishes all its listeners a blessed and prosperous Sikh New Year!

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
