A significant new chapter for the Afghan Sikh community in the UK will begin on Saturday 17th May 2025, with the official opening of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar Birmingham, located at 115 The Uplands, Birmingham, B67 6BJ.
The gurdwara, developed and funded by members of the Afghan Sikh diaspora, will serve as a new spiritual, cultural, and community hub for Sikhs in the Smethwick and greater Birmingham area. The opening ceremony is expected to draw attendees from across the country, including faith leaders, local dignitaries, and members of the wider Sikh and South Asian communities.

The Afghan Sikh community, many of whom resettled in the UK after fleeing conflict and religious persecution in Afghanistan, have described the establishment of the gurdwara as a powerful symbol of resilience, identity, and faith.
“This gurdwara will not only be a place of worship, but a home for our heritage and a space where future generations can stay connected to their roots,” said Kultar Singh Ji, one of the community sevadaars. “It will be a centre for seva (selfless service), learning, and unity — open to all.”
The inaugural event will feature traditional Sikh ceremonies including an Akhand Path (continuous recitation of Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji), kirtan (spiritual hymns), and langar – the free community kitchen, which will be open to people of all backgrounds, in line with Sikh teachings.
In addition to regular religious services, the gurdwara will offer Punjabi language classes, youth programs, and outreach services for new immigrants and vulnerable community members.
Local leaders have welcomed the opening as a positive step toward strengthening community ties and promoting intercultural understanding in Smethwick – an area known for its rich diversity and history of migration.
The doors of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar Birmingham will officially open to the public at 10:00 AM on Saturday, with prayers and community celebrations continuing throughout the weekend.
