Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurpurab 2024 – Birmingham Celebrates 555 Years

15th November 2024 marked a momentous occasion as Sikhs around the West Midlands came together to celebrate Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab, commemorating the 555th birth anniversary. Recognised as the founder of Sikhi, Guru Nanak’s teachings of equality, humility, and oneness resonate deeply across generations. 

Born in 1469 in Nankana Sahib, now in Pakistan, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasised universal brotherhood and selfless service. Their timeless hymns, compiled in Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, continue to inspire millions of people of all faiths. 

The celebrations in 2024 were especially significant, featuring vibrant processions, kirtan (devotional singing), and community service events. In Amritsar, the Golden Temple was illuminated with breathtaking lights, drawing thousands of devotees. Across Birmingham and surrounding areas, Sikh communities hosted Langars, the tradition of serving free meals on the streets to thousands, embodying Guru Nanak’s principle of equality. 

In Birmingham, grand processions and prayer gatherings were held, with participants sharing messages of unity and kindness. Similar enthusiasm was witnessed in cities like Wolverhampton, Coventry, and London, underscoring the global spirit of Sikhism. 

This year also highlighted increased efforts to spread Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji ’s message through education and outreach. Guru Nanak Gurdwara organised lectures on his teachings, emphasising seva (selfless service) and equality – principles urgently relevant in today’s divided world. Many Sikh youth-led social media campaigns targeted the West Midlands, ensuring Guru Nanak Ji’s wisdom reached younger audiences.
